The future of independent filmmaking is still alive as far as Gene Rhee is concerned. Rhee’s films have been hits on the film festival circuit and have even been able to find distribution.
With his quirky feature film “The Trouble with Romance,” Gene Rhee managed to turn the formulaic romantic comedy genre on its head. Warner Bros. acquired distribution rights to the film after it became a fan favorite at the Cinquest Film Festival and numerous other festivals around the country.
Through Warner Bros.’ partners, Comcast, Time Warner, Cox, DirectTV, and EchoStar Gene Rhee’s Trouble was made available nationwide via On Demand, iTunes and Amazon VOD. Distribution via video-on-demand has become the new wave for distributing low budget independent cinema and has given hope to many independent filmmakers.
Gene Rhee is a graduate of the U.S.C. School of Cinematic Arts’ Peter Stark Program and has a B.S. in Marketing from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
